welcome back to beyond the headlines with Cheryl Jennings and Jessica Castro filling in for today's special Roundtable Edition focusing on our Bay area's Latino community and we have talked about the importance of supporting philanthropy in the Latino Community but now we want to little brighter and talk about organizations that actually impact immigrants here in the Bay Area there are programs that support english-as-a-second-language there's also Legal Services I think a lot of times when was thinking about the Latino Community they think about folks coming here from outside of the US and speaking Spanish so can you guys talk a little bit more about what organizations are here which ones are our bacon and why that's important even within our community and Refugee Rights organization of providing free legal services and we also do policy advocacy local state and federal and can be organizing and there's many organizations that have been around for many years doing this work like the immigration law legal Resource Center let us a central angle sandwich support of central Americans here in San Francisco the national immigration Eye Center so many organization has sprawled out on to help immigrants and refugees you know transition into their new country what kind of why do we need legal services for someone trying to navigate the legal system who are the u.s. so you know there's many different stages of immigration or you know when an immigrant comes into this country and maybe asylee status maybe they aren't unaccompanied minor or maybe they're a family that came here on a Visa or someone that came here on a work and sometimes they overstay their staying so they need legal support in order to become eventually a citizen of all families at my gray hair that have lived here for years like my dad he's been in this country for 40 years he's a legal permanent resident you know has to be a citizen now so he can vote at the next election he would need legal support to make that happen it's very costly to get immigration Legal Services rights and so nonprofits like siren and others provide low-cost services are free and too many of family that are looking to become citizens and my family have to go through the entire legal process and then finally get your citizenship and that is a lengthy prom often for folks we were lucky that we were able my parents spoke plenty of English to get through that process but often times maybe one you can talk about this folks just don't have English as a second language or they're still trying to acquire that and trying to go through the legal process as well think it's about that your school one of those classes for parents and so we're providing them at the school providing child care so that that's not a barrier so 3 days a week 3 3 hours a day how the comment and and learn basic English and part of that is also having them understand the school system so that they can advocate for their children so not only that they're learning English learning the school system as well so the they are better prepared to support their children services that they've sought throughout the years or you have sauce for sale so I came to the US when I was about six years old okay with my parents and my three siblings and yeah was a complete Culture Shock by leave my my parents brought us here for a better future and play I from a personal standpoint I just have to say that having the support from organizations and my school and mentors and people who believe in me really made a big difference in my life I mean I can't imagine being where I am today and I graduated from college I got my MBA from those College and I don't think that would have been possible without the support that I received from these organizations these people you know Jewels but also organizations that know how to provide them knowledge and the resources that I needed all of you guys are casino and a very well and Anna you've sport Marcella's siren organization and so is that a part of the reason that you've decided to give back I mean everyone here is sitting here you know kind of working within the Latino Community for me interesting game with no Community from Shannon having the network of of donors in our Community Partners and our accelerator which will talk about later I guess it's amazing how our culture is so rude and family right so everyone that we have a program that we host we can't help but make true connection forever Affair all about authentic relationships are all about people and I feel like that's how the Latino Community from abstract become so so close to everyone because becomes like a family that I'm here with two other people that I know will be fine when I say do definitely and many of the evenings that I nor folks around the Stables on just do their day-to-day job which is already doing non-profit work we volunteer we're running other programs and groove see no volunteering with museums helping in our school so I think there's definitely a culture of giving back and knowing where you came from and how you got here and knowing that you need to help others to get to that place and giving some opportunities for parents to be immersed in the American culture once they do come here to the Bay Area if they are from part of the United States learning English and we want to talk a little bit more about those educational opportunities and philanthropies that do touch on that type of work as we're going to talk about education in the Latino Community when we come back stay with us
