the southbound the country's largest Vietnamese American Community Church appropriate to see the first dual language immersion program being set up in the Franklin McKinley School District in San Jose to talk about this huge cultural leap is Alyssa Pena from the school district also with this is band when a parent whose child is starting the program this fall welcome to the show but how it became it's been years in the making for the school district to consider launching a Vietnamese language immersion program as a school district we serve approximately 34% of Vietnamese families within our community and so this is really exciting for us to be able to finally MR2 life the program itself basically builds bilingual bilingual and biliterate see for students that are going to be participating so children that are going to be starting kindergarten in the fall will have the opportunity to be eligible to participate in this program come to fruition there's only two other programs in Calif have an offer Vietnamese dual language programs on so there's not a whole ton of resources out there already created for a program like this you see often times you know Spanish immersion programs and Mandarin programs so we're really in a place being able to be creative and Innovative and so our Educational Services Department right now is visiting different programs in Oregon they went to visit the programs down south and we brought it a stakeholder group that's made up of local Vietnamese leaders parents that are going to really be able to help us really shape what this program is going to look like both and in terms of academic instruction but also the cultural pieces that are going to be really important to integrate with him yeah that would be some of the intangibles there on the co aspects of it definitely is not bilingual right now right so is it your feeling that you want your child to be bilingual I see lunch and open some doors for them if they'd be able to speak a different language and then just left franklin-mckinley offering up it being an adult immersion in Vietnamese is just a plus I might buy something that you would not expect to be able to do Centennial School District I ask because the window is there right for her does your child have expressed any kind of reluctance or enthusiasm extremely hard when you have a knot another Baylor speaker in the household so you know her dad doesn't speak to me so I'm speaking English to him and then it's hard to kind of like that language inside the household never be immersed I mean it really is kind of a cliche in a way but it is so true right I mean that that age that's when they should be doing this language development is fast and get to be integrated earlier so certify we know that that's when children are developing those those language skills that are going to last a lifetime and so for the program to be starting for us in kindergarten at the school or we're going to be having a program which is when will Spring school it's a TK to 8th grade school so the kids are going to be together you know Court style if you will on starting from kindergarten all the way through 8th grade and each year will continue to build an a new great into the program so our first cohort will Care Partners on starting in the fall and then from there it'll continue to build on so we really do feel like it'll be a great sense of community both for the students participating on the family that all the students when does immersion program are Vietnamese or oh I'm so the students that are eligible to participate in this program can be English-speaking students at hornedo speaking English and also English language learning students who are Vietnamese speakers already so that in order for the program to real the effective we are looking for for participants to be a either English-speaking already or Vietnamese speaking because they'll be immersed together learning 50% of the day in English and 50% of the day and then just being able to be immersed life everybody already at least knows the advantage of being bilingual these days.
