Franklin-McKinley School District's Independent Study Program (ISP), is an Independent Study option for students who are looking for an alternative educational program. For the 2023-24 school year, FMSD will be making updates to our program to align with the vision of providing an educational experience that supports students who desire a more challenging educational experience, whose health or other personal circumstances make classroom attendance difficult and/or who are unable to access course(s) due to scheduling problems (BP 6158).
For the 2023-24 school year, FMSD will be returning to our 4th-8th grade Independent Study model. Classes will not be offered to students in grades Tk-3rd. All students enrolled in the 4th-8th grade ISP will be expected to meet with their classroom teacher in-person at Lairon for one hour a week and will be expected to complete daily assignments as assigned by the instructor, independently. Transportation to Lairon for 1:1 or small group in-person sessions will not be provided.
If you have a rising 4th through 8th grade student who is interested in participating in ISP for the 2023-24 school year, please complete this SURVEY to determine if ISP will be a good fit for your student. For students who score below 12 points on this survey, ISP may not be a good option at this time.
To apply for the 2023-24 Independent Study Program at Lairon, please complete this FORM in its entirety. If you have any questions, please contact Joy Scarpinato, Director of Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment via email at [email protected] or by phone at (408) 283-6043.
PROCEDURES FOR ENROLLING, DISENROLLING, AND REENROLLING IN ISP
To enroll in ISP for the 2023-24 school year, a contract must be in place for each student. This contract must be signed by the student's parent/legal guardian. You may start your registration on our FMSD ISP Registration Form. For students with exceptional needs, the student's individualized education program (IEP) team, at their current school site, must approve for Independent Study before the student can begin participating.
If your student is enrolled in ISP, and you wish to have your student return to in-person instruction during the school year, you may provide notice to the Director or Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, Joy Scarpinato at joy.scarpinato.fmsd.org, 408-283-6044, and your student will be returned to in-person instruction no later than five instructional days after receiving the notice. Please note, students will be placed on availability, students are not guaranteed a spot at their home school.
