Providing a safe learning environment is imperative to ensure all students in the Franklin-McKinley School District are successful. The District keeps current with the most up-to-date safety and security practices. The Franklin-McKinley School District works collaboratively with local, state and federal health, safety and emergency personnel to develop and maintain plans for responding to a variety of emergency situations. Each school site has developed a Safety Plan with input and feedback from a variety of stakeholders and is reviewed annually for needed updates.
All school staff have been trained on "Run, Hide and Defend" to mitigate dangers during a lockdown event. In addition, schools have identified student and parent staging areas in the event of many types of emergencies. Each school has identified a critical response team and training has been developed in collaboration with the San Jose Police and Fire Departments.
Each school has a safety plan developed by a safety team composed of administrators, staff, and parents. The plan is approved by the School Site Council and reviewed by all staff. The Safety Plan contains an emergency directory, action plan, responsibilities and duties, and procedures for many kinds of emergencies.
All schools campuses are closed during the academic hours. Students are not allowed to leave without permission. Campus gates are locked during the day. Parents may access the school through the Front Office at their child’s school.
The Franklin-McKinley School District has implemented common dress requirements at a majority of the schools to easily identify outsiders on campuses and minimize gang colors. The remaining sites are focusing on enforcing the current dress code and holding students to higher dress expectations. Parents may visit their child’s school website for a breakdown of uniform requirements.
Shelter-in-Place: This is a precautionary measure aimed to keep students and staff safe by keeping everyone indoors. A Shelter-in-Place may be instituted by a school official or law enforcement to separate students and staff from dangerous situations or unsafe environmental hazards.
Lockdown: This is an emergency measure in response to a threat directly to the school or in the surrounding community. Typically, a lockdown may involve a violent person, active shooter, or nearby police activity. In the event of a lockdown, do not go to the site until school officials and law enforcement has cleared the threat.
Alternative Evacuation Site: This is a location established by the school administration which will be used as a safe area for all students and staff during an emergency situation. Evacuation sites and further instructions will be announced to parents and staff when an off-site location is needed.
If you notice a potentially unsafe condition, please report it immediately to the school principal. Reports may be made about safety, harassment, damage to school property, or anything that has contributed or could contribute to a student, parent, or staff member feeling unsafe and/or mistreated.
