Board of Education Approves to Continue Distance Learning through June 15, 2021
San Jose, CA - On Tuesday, November 10, 2020, the Board of Education unanimously approved to continue distance learning through June 15, 2021.
Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Board of Education unanimously approved to continue distance learning through June 15, 2021. In addition, the Board would consider the potential of reopening and offering in-class instruction at any given time for specific high need students, including students with disabilities, English learners, and newcomers who require additional support as long as it is safe to do so.
Distance Learning/In Person Instruction Recommendation

November 6, 2020 Message:     Spanish   Vietnamese

At the July 15, 2020 Board meeting, the Franklin-McKinley School District Board of Education approved Distance Learning to be offered from August 17-December 18, 2020. Santa Clara County has recently moved to the orange tier on the State's COVID-19 Monitoring Blueprint for Safety system. School districts in the orange or yellow tier have the ability to offer in-person instruction following Public Health Guidelines.

The Reopening Advisory Workgroup and the Administration after evaluating the conditions and listening to stakeholders is recommending that the district remain in distance learning until February 12, 2021. This recommendation includes focused efforts on enhancing distance learning. At the same time, the Workgroup and staff will design a possible in-person option for all students. If it is not feasible to provide in-person instruction in February, the Workgroup may recommend a plan to offer individual/small group instruction for identified students who require additional support following Public Health guidelines.

The board will be considering this recommendation at its virtual school board meeting on November 10, 2020. If you wish to address the board regarding this recommendation you can sign up to speak using the following link:

 2020-2021 School Year
July 17, 2020 Message:     Spanish     Vietnamese
Dear Franklin-McKinley Community,
I hope you and your family are well. The purpose of this communication is to update you regarding the 2020-2021 school year. Governor Newsom announced today that schools would be closed due to the increased rates of COVID-19 in our county. The FMSD Board of Education voted on Wednesday July 15th to open our schools with Full Distance Learning starting on August 17, 2020 (The first day of school).
We share this very important update with you as families need information to plan for the new school year. We appreciate all the parents, staff, students and community who have provided us with critical feedback up to this point, however we must prioritize the safety of our students and staff. We will continue to monitor COVID-19 rates in our area and will adjust our learning plans accordingly.
In our previous update, we had discussed Hybrid and Virtual Learning Models as our recommendation for the new school year. All students will now participate in Full Distance Learning with district curriculum and teachers providing online instruction. We will ensure every student has access to a device and the necessary connectivity to successfully participate in Full Distance Learning.
Franklin-McKinley School District will continue to develop and finalize its plan for starting the new school year. All essential details will be shared in the coming weeks with our community and will remain focused on our District priorities:
Reopening Principles
Town Hall Meetings will be scheduled in the near future to share information and answer questions. Again, I want to thank all the parents, staff, students and members of the community who have shared their feedback with our leadership as we have continued to plan for the new school year. We appreciate your continued flexibility as we continue navigating these challenging times in the COVID-19 pandemic. We strongly believe that by working together, we will continue providing equitable outcomes for all students and facilitating opportunities for all students to learn and thrive.
