Extended School Closure and Distance Learning Update

FMSD School Closure and Distance Learning Update

April 10, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Keeping our students, staff, and community safe and healthy has been, and continues to be, our top priority.  We have now completed the 4th week of school closure and have been working diligently to prepare for distance learning through the remainder of the academic year.  While our students will not be coming back to school physically, our commitment to provide learning, enrichment, and support services and resources will continue during the school closure.

We are living in uncertain times and this pandemic is presenting our community with many different challenges, including the implementation of distance-learning.  As we navigate this unprecedented long-term school closure, the work around continuity of education and responsiveness to the whole child takes on greater importance.

In this unprecedented time of managing a pandemic, we all want to know how we are moving forward together. Given this uncertainty, we are leaning into our core values as a guide to support our decision making and have defined a set of guiding principles.

Guiding Principles

  • Attend to the physical, health, social and emotional needs of students, families and staff
  • Be empathetic towards the level of stress this situation is putting on students, families, and staff
  • Prioritize connection before content.  Social emotional learning is a focus for all!
  • Support students, staff, and families as our school community learns in a new way
  • The instructional design will encourage students to participate to the greatest degree possible with no expectations of students turning in assignments. We will reinforce grade level content standards and provide enrichment

FMSD has developed an Extended School Closure Guidance Plan that includes distance learning resources, staff contact information, and continued operation of services.

During these times, we must allow for flexibility and, to a certain degree, understand the various factors that are currently out of our control. The following Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) pertain to distance learning and how we will continue to operate as a School District during the extended school closure. Click here for the FAQ.

Once again, thank you for your collaboration and support during this transition. We remain committed to our vision of equitable outcomes for all students and facilitating opportunities for all students to have high aspirations and gain the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to thrive in a global society.

Sincerely,
